Stenciling Basics
Stenciling is one of the easiest ways to add painted designer touches to virtually any surface. While the technique itself is decades-old, Plaid's stencil motifs, designs and alphabets are as fresh as today. Discover the art of stenciling--it's truly as simple as brushing paint over a pre-cut design.
Stenciling 101
Personalize gifts and accessories or redo walls and room décor--it's a snap to beautify any project with Plaid's stencil designs. Use with your favorite Plaid paints and discover the one-step joy of decorating with stencils.
Here's what you need to get started:
- Project Surface
- FolkArt Acrylic paints
- Brush Basin or container for water
- Stencil
- Stencil brushes
- Foam plate
- Paper towel
- 1" Foam brush
- Stencil tape or low tack masking tape
- Fine grit sandpaper
- Always properly prepare your surface before stenciling. If your project surface is wood, neatly basecoat - sand - basecoat. If your project surface is glass, thoroughly clean with soap and water followed by rubbing alcohol. When stenciling on fabric, prewash with soap and water to remove manufacturer's sizing.
- When stenciling many colors in a close designed area, mask cut portions of a stencil to prevent color from unwanted areas. Masking is simple to achieve; simply place a piece of stencil tape over an area to protect it from the unwanted color, or place a piece of paper covering the open area for protection.
- Experiment with stenciling tools for different creative looks. Of course, stenciling with a stencil brush is the norm, however, try creating different effects with sponges - both sea and cellulose, Daubers and Spouncers!
